VAMORI, ARIZONA—A routine border enforcement operation turned violent on March 2, 2025, when a 22-year-old Mexican national, Gerardo Tejada-Calleja, allegedly attacked a U.S. Border Patrol agent while attempting to evade arrest.
According to the Department of Justice, the agent responded to a report of suspected illegal border crossings in Vamori, Arizona. Upon arrival, he found Tejada-Calleja hiding under a tree. When approached, the suspect fled down a wash, but after a brief chase, he and another individual were located under brush and trees.
As the agent attempted to call for backup, Tejada-Calleja allegedly lunged at him, grabbing his gun belt and radio in an effort to seize control. The confrontation escalated when Tejada-Calleja wrapped his arms around the agent, tackling him to the ground. Despite briefly escaping, both suspects were later apprehended and taken into custody.
Tejada-Calleja now faces serious federal charges, including Assault on a Federal Officer and Illegal Entry into the United States. This alarming incident highlights the dangers Border Patrol agents face while securing the U.S.-Mexico border. Authorities continue to investigate as officials push for stricter enforcement measures to prevent violent encounters like this in the future.
