In a shocking case, Texas authorities have arrested two individuals for illegally performing abortions in violation of the state’s strict laws. Maria Margarita Rojas, 48, a midwife known as “Dr. Maria,” and Jose Cendan Ley, 29, were taken into custody after an extensive investigation.
Rojas operated three clinics in Waller, Cypress, and Spring counties. According to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, the facilities employed unlicensed workers who falsely presented themselves as medical professionals. Authorities also claim that Rojas personally performed abortions, violating the Texas Human Life Protection Act, which bans nearly all abortions except when the pregnant person’s life is at risk.
Waller County District Attorney Sean Whittmore vowed strict prosecution, stating, “We respect the sanctity of all life and expect our citizens to follow Texas laws.” Paxton filed a restraining order to shut down the clinics, promising to hold violators accountable.
Rojas and Ley face serious charges, with bonds set at $200,000 for practicing medicine without a license and $500,000 for abortion-related charges. As legal proceedings unfold, Texas remains one of the most restrictive states regarding abortion access, reinforcing its commitment to enforcing its pro-life laws.
