Chicago saw unusually warm weather on Friday, with temperatures reaching close to record highs. Despite strong winds of 45 to 50 mph, the temperature at Midway Airport hit 60 degrees, while O’Hare recorded 57 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. These temperatures were just a few degrees below the record high of 62 degrees set in 2016.
For late February, the average high temperature in Chicago is around 40.5 degrees, with an average low of 26.1 degrees. So, Friday’s warmth was well above normal. However, it didn’t last long as temperatures dropped significantly by evening.
A wind advisory was in effect until 9 p.m. Friday due to strong gusts reaching up to 50 mph. Officials advised drivers to be extra cautious and suggested securing lightweight outdoor items, such as patio furniture and decorations, to prevent them from blowing away. They also warned against activities that could start fires, such as improperly discarding cigarette butts or parking on dry grass.
By Friday night, temperatures had fallen sharply, and scattered showers were seen in some areas. A few flurries were also possible as cooler air moved in.
The weekend will feel much colder compared to Friday’s warmth. On Saturday, temperatures are expected to stay in the low 30s during the day and drop to the high teens at night. Sunday will be slightly warmer, with highs in the upper 30s and lows in the high 20s.
Looking ahead to Monday, the weather is expected to become milder again. Temperatures will rise to the low to mid-40s, but there is a chance of rain or snow showers.
Chicago residents should be prepared for fluctuating temperatures and stay updated on weather changes. Dressing in layers and being cautious while driving in strong winds can help navigate these sudden weather shifts safely.
