Gainesville, FL – Olivier Rioux, the world’s tallest teenager at 7-foot-9, has decided to redshirt his freshman year with the Florida Gators men’s basketball team for the 2024-25 season. This decision allows Rioux to practice with the team and develop his skills without losing a year of eligibility.
Head Coach Todd Golden explained that the plan was made in collaboration with Rioux and his family to optimize his development. “This wasn’t a choice that I made for him. People [from] our program have discussed this with him, his parents, and his AAU coach in an effort to determine the best course of action for him,” Golden said.
Despite fans chanting for “Oli” during games, Rioux has embraced the redshirt plan. He will continue to practice with the team and focus on honing his skills, aiming to make a significant impact in the 2025-26 season.
Rioux, a native of Quebec, Canada, joined the Gators as a three-star prospect from IMG Academy. His extraordinary height has garnered significant attention, and the coaching staff is committed to his long-term development.
By redshirting, Rioux retains four years of eligibility, providing ample time to develop his game and contribute to the Gators’ future success.
