Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.) recently found himself in a bit of an awkward spot on TV when past comments from Donald Trump resurfaced. It all went down during an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” where host Jon Karl brought up a harsh post Trump had made in 2023. Trump had called Emmer a “RINO” and claimed he was “totally out of touch” while Emmer was vying for the House speaker role.
Karl, knowing the tension, asked, “I assume you’ve gotten to know Trump a little bit better?”
Emmer wasted no time with his response, gushing about the president-elect. He said, “The president has been wonderful to me, and wonderful to my wife. He’s done everything he could to campaign in Minnesota. He’s been amazing.” Emmer went on to share how they’d be working together on Trump’s agenda, adding, “My job is to make sure we execute.”
But Karl wasn’t done. He asked Emmer about his personal experience with Trump, and Emmer, chuckling, replied, “He’s a very blunt and honest human being,” which Karl seemed to enjoy as well.
However, the exchange quickly caught fire on social media, with many people calling it “humiliating” and “utterly embarrassing” for Emmer. It’s safe to say the moment wasn’t exactly the smoothest for the Republican lawmaker.
It’s a reminder that politics can be full of surprises, and sometimes, a politician’s past words come back to haunt them—even if they’re all smiles in the present!
