When Donald Trump suggested that the United States might be interested in acquiring Greenland, the island’s leaders had a clear message: let’s work together. Greenland’s authorities responded by proposing a partnership with the US to tap into the island’s vital resources—resources that play a key role in renewable energy and defense.
Building Stronger Ties with the US and NATO
Greenland’s Minister for Independence and Foreign Affairs, Vivian Motzfeldt, emphasized that Greenland is eager to collaborate with the incoming US administration and its NATO allies to ensure security and stability in the Arctic. “Our future is ours to define,” she said, stressing Greenland’s right to self-determination.
In a meeting held in Copenhagen, Minister Motzfeldt, along with Prime Minister Mute Egede, spoke with US Ambassador Alan Leventhal. The discussions were part of ongoing talks between Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Denmark, as tensions over Greenland’s future continue to rise.
Greenland’s Wealth of Critical Resources
Greenland isn’t just a stunning, icy landscape—it’s also rich in essential resources. The island is home to 25 out of the 34 critical materials the EU is actively seeking, including rare metals like neodymium and dysprosium. These materials are used in a variety of high-tech industries, such as renewable energy (think battery cells for electric cars and motors for wind turbines), space exploration, digitalization, and defense.
In fact, Greenland is sitting on a treasure trove of rare metals, estimated to be around 42 million tons. As the ice retreats due to climate change, these resources are becoming more accessible. While China currently dominates the extraction of many of these metals, Greenland’s potential is starting to attract global attention.
Looking Ahead: A New Chapter for Greenland
Greenland’s leaders are firm in their belief that their island belongs to its people, and the future direction of the island should be decided by Greenlanders themselves. As Minister Motzfeldt put it, “The fight for independence is Greenland’s own matter.” Greenland is taking steps to ensure its future is shaped by its people, with the resources and partnerships it needs to thrive.
