Share news:

A tragic accident in San Bernardino, California, has left a 5-year-old boy, Nathaniel Rodriguez, fighting for his life after a fiery car crash that claimed the lives of his father, grandparents, and his father’s girlfriend. The heartbreaking incident happened on December 15, just a day after Nathaniel’s fifth birthday.

According to his family, Nathaniel was in the car with his loved ones when the vehicle veered off the road, hit a tree stump, and burst into flames. Firefighters managed to pull him from the wreckage, making him the sole survivor of the crash. The accident occurred near San Bernardino, and authorities are still investigating what caused it.

Nathaniel’s injuries are severe. He suffered burns on half of his body, leading to the amputation of both arms below the elbows. He also broke both his legs and is heavily sedated in the burn unit at UC Irvine Medical Center, relying on a ventilator to breathe. His mother, Adriana Shrem, has been by his side throughout this unimaginable ordeal. She shared her pain, recalling how her son was awake and conscious while the fire caused devastating injuries to his small body.

Doctors have performed multiple surgeries on Nathaniel, and more are expected in the coming weeks. Specialists are working to treat burns on his face, head, and other areas, and his condition remains critical. Despite the overwhelming challenges, his family is holding onto hope, describing every successful surgery as a blessing.

The accident also claimed the lives of Nathaniel’s father, Edgar Rodriguez, his grandparents Ramiro Rodriguez and Maria Benitez Ramos, and his father’s girlfriend, Melinda Perez. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office confirmed their identities.

Nathaniel’s recovery journey will be long and challenging, involving months in the hospital, physical therapy, and eventually learning to use prosthetic arms. To help with medical expenses and ongoing care, the family has set up a fundraiser, which has already raised nearly $55,000.
