WICHITA, Kan. – A tragic incident unfolded in south Wichita on Saturday night when a 1-year-old girl was fatally shot at her home, according to police.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 8:36 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Santa Fe, near Broadway and Pawnee. The child was rushed to a hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead at 9:27 p.m., police spokesperson Andrew Ford confirmed.
Authorities are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. According to scanner traffic from Sedgwick County Emergency Communications, a second caller reported that an older sibling had accidentally shot the young girl in the head. However, no arrests have been made at this time.
This marks at least the second homicide in Wichita this year, a stark contrast to the 12 reported at this time in 2024.
The investigation remains ongoing, and police urge anyone with information to come forward.
