A man in Screven County, Georgia, has been arrested and faces multiple charges for mistreating animals. The charges include two counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, 11 counts of animal neglect, and one count of abandoning a dead animal.
It all started when the Screven County Sheriff’s Office received complaints about livestock being poorly cared for on Jenk Hill Road. When deputies checked it out, they found a heartbreaking scene—dead animals visible from the road.
After getting a search warrant, investigators found two dead cows and eleven others that looked neglected. They also discovered two goats that were malnourished. Local animal control officers, a veterinarian, and an inspector from the Department of Agriculture were brought in to help.
The investigation revealed that the animals’ owner, 73-year-old Jonathan Clarence Roberts, hadn’t been providing the cows and goats with basic necessities like enough food and water. Sadly, this neglect led to the death of two cows.
The sheriff’s office took swift action, seizing the remaining animals and relocating them to a safe place where they could get the care they needed.
