A North Carolina community is mourning after a tragic incident at a Greensboro Food Lion grocery store on Monday morning, where a police officer lost his life in the line of duty.
Officer Michael Horan, 44, from the Greensboro Police Department, was the first to respond to a 911 call about a suspicious man inside the store on Lawndale Drive. The caller mentioned the man might be armed, prompting a swift response from the police.
When Horan arrived, he encountered the man and tried to handle the situation. However, after a brief struggle, the man pulled out a gun and shot the officer. Tragically, Horan didn’t have time to draw his weapon or defend himself. The shooter fled the scene in a car, leaving behind shock and heartbreak.
The incident happened around 11 a.m., and nearly two hours later, authorities tracked the suspect down in Johnston County. Deputies from Johnston and Sampson counties gave chase as the car headed toward Sutton Town. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol eventually stopped the vehicle on Interstate 40, near the Duplin County line, using a controlled maneuver known as a PIT. Thankfully, the suspect was taken into custody without any further violence.
Officials haven’t released the suspect’s name yet, but they confirmed that charges are pending. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) is leading the investigation with support from the Guilford County District Attorney’s Office.
Officer Horan had been with the Greensboro Police Department since 2018. Known for his dedication, he was also a loving husband and father. The department described him as a man with an outstanding reputation who was respected by both his colleagues and the community. A spokesperson urged everyone to keep Horan’s family, friends, and fellow officers in their thoughts and prayers during this heartbreaking time.
The grocery store, Food Lion, expressed deep sadness over the tragedy. In a statement, they extended their condolences to Horan’s family and friends and assured their cooperation with the ongoing investigation. The store on Lawndale Drive will remain closed for now, and the company is providing support to its employees.
North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper also shared his thoughts, stating that state law enforcement has been actively involved in responding to the incident. He emphasized the importance of supporting the local community and law enforcement during such a challenging time.
This devastating event has left a lasting impact on Greensboro and beyond, reminding everyone of the risks police officers face every day while protecting their communities.
