It started with a batch of cucumbers that might have been carrying salmonella, and now it’s causing a wave of product recalls across the country.
One of the latest comes from Sprouts Farmers Market, a popular grocery chain, which has just pulled its Gyro Family Kits off the shelves. The reason? A supplier, Reser’s Fine Foods, told Sprouts that the cucumbers in the kit’s tzatziki sauce could be tainted.
This isn’t the first time this product has been in the spotlight. Just last week, another company recalled the very same gyro sandwich kits from Walmart’s Sam’s Club stores for the same salmonella worries.
The recalled Sprouts Gyro Family Kits have the UPC number 20594800000 and “use by” dates between December 29, 2024, and January 7, 2025.
These kits made their way into Sprouts stores in many states, including Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Missouri, Texas, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.
Salmonella might sound scary, but here’s what you need to know. According to health experts at the CDC, salmonella infects about 1.35 million people in the United States every year.
Most get through it with a few days of feeling sick—think throwing up, stomach pain, and diarrhea—without needing medical help. But kids younger than 5 and older adults over 65 can have a tougher time.
In fact, around 26,000 people end up in the hospital each year, and about 420 cases are deadly.
If you have one of these recalled Gyro Family Kits at home, it’s best to return it or throw it out. When it comes to salmonella, being careful is always the right choice.
