Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene. Costa Mesa police and firefighters were joined by public works teams and Southern California Edison crews to manage the chaos. According to police spokesperson Roxi Fyad, it was a massive effort to address the damage and secure the area.
Inside the wrecked car, the driver, 20-year-old Anthony Rodolfo Samayoa from Carson, was injured but survived. He was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and later booked into jail. Samayoa now faces serious charges, including felony DUI, vehicular homicide, evading police, and attempted vehicle theft.
Another passenger, 21-year-old Sergio Avalos, also from Carson, was in the back seat and sustained injuries in the crash. After receiving medical attention, Avalos was arrested on charges of conspiracy and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.
Sadly, the third person in the car, 20-year-old Oscar Axael Macias, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, didn’t survive the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Orange County Coroner’s Office later confirmed his identity.
While investigators processed the crash site, crews worked in the pouring rain to fix the downed power pole and clear the road. The cleanup and repairs forced a road closure in the area that lasted until 10 a.m. Sunday, according to Fyad.
Authorities are still piecing together the details of the incident. It remains unclear whether the Lexus was stolen or belonged to the suspects. Newport Beach police have yet to provide an update on this aspect of the investigation.
