A mother in Michigan has been arrested after police found her three children living in terrible conditions. The 34-year-old woman, whose name has not been shared to protect the children’s identities, was taken into custody after authorities discovered her kids alone in a filthy home in Pontiac.
The children—a 15-year-old boy and two girls, aged 12 and 13—were found on Friday after the landlord contacted the police. He had not heard from the mother since December, and she had not paid rent since October.
When officers arrived at the house, they were shocked by what they saw. The home was filled with garbage, mold, and human waste, with trash piled up to four feet in some rooms. The children told police their mother had abandoned them in either 2020 or 2021, and they had been living alone ever since.
The kids had little understanding of basic hygiene. They did not know how to use personal care items or even flush a toilet. Authorities revealed that they had not been to school since their mother left them. The girls had stayed inside the house for years, sleeping on pizza boxes, while their brother had only a mattress on the floor. They spent most of their time watching TV and playing games.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard described the conditions as unacceptable, saying that even animals should not be forced to live that way. “These children were completely neglected, with no education or care from their mother,” he said. “This kind of abuse has long-lasting effects.”
Despite the harsh conditions, the children managed to survive. Every week, someone—either their mother or a stranger—dropped off food on their porch. When found, the kids had extremely matted hair and toenails so long that it was hard for them to walk.
The mother was located at a different place and arrested. Police also noted that the children’s father was not involved in their lives.
Now, the children are staying with a relative and receiving care. The mother is being held in Oakland County Jail as authorities prepare to take legal action against her. “We will present this case to the prosecutor and ensure this woman faces the consequences of her actions,” Bouchard stated.
This heartbreaking case highlights the serious impact of neglect and the need for stronger child protection measures. Authorities are now focused on helping the children recover from years of mistreatment.
