Indiana School Bus Horror: Drunk Driver’s Reckless Ride Stopped by Brave Students

Share news:

A school bus ride in La Porte County, Indiana, turned into a terrifying experience for dozens of young students on September 20, 2024. The driver, 38-year-old Kayla I. Pier, was later accused of being drunk while behind the wheel with 32 students on board. Thankfully, the quick-thinking students reported her alarming behavior, which led to authorities stepping in and arresting her.

Pier had been driving the bus for the La Porte Community School Corporation that afternoon, transporting students from La Porte Middle School to Riley Elementary School. But during the ride, it didn’t take long for the students to notice something was very wrong. They saw her driving erratically and acting strangely, so they immediately spoke up.

The school district’s Transportation Director quickly acted, intercepting the bus as it arrived at Riley Elementary. Pier was removed from the bus, and school officials began investigating. Later that same day, Pier resigned from her position.

A month later, on October 21, 2024, the school superintendent informed the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office about the incident. The school had received the results of a toxicology test taken by Pier after the incident, confirming she was intoxicated. It’s unclear why the school waited over a month to involve the authorities or why they conducted their own toxicology test in the first place. The school declined to provide further details.

Once the sheriff’s office was notified, deputies launched a thorough investigation. They reviewed bus surveillance footage, collected statements from witnesses, and even looked through cellphone videos taken by the students. Based on their findings, an arrest warrant was issued for Pier on December 20, 2024.

Pier turned herself in on December 27 and was booked into the La Porte County Jail. She was released later that day after posting bond.

Authorities praised the students for their quick actions that may have prevented a tragedy. Administrative Captain Derek J. Allen said the kids’ courage and alertness made a huge difference, commending them for reporting their driver’s behavior so quickly.

The school district also released a statement applauding the students for recognizing something was wrong and taking action. They highlighted the importance of speaking up when noticing concerning behavior, adding that the students’ actions embodied the “see something, say something” values taught in schools.

The district also assured the public of their commitment to transparency while respecting the legal process and the privacy of everyone involved. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and speaking out when something doesn’t feel right. Thanks to these brave students, a potentially disastrous situation was averted.
