In the wake of a disheartening 28-27 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson has confirmed the firing of General Manager Joe Douglas. This move marks a significant shift within the organization, which is clearly aimed at revitalizing the struggling AFC East team after a dismal 3-8 start to the 2024 season.
In his statement, Johnson expressed gratitude towards Douglas for his six years of dedication to the team: “Today, I informed Joe Douglas he will no longer serve as the General Manager of the New York Jets. I want to thank Joe for his commitment to the Jets over the last six years and wish him and his family the best moving forward.”
Phil Savage, former Browns general manager, will step in as the interim General Manager for the remainder of the season. The search for a new permanent GM will commence immediately, signaling a new chapter for the franchise as they aim to rebuild and return to competitive form.
This major organizational shake-up comes on the heels of another big change last month, when the Jets parted ways with head coach Saleh. These moves highlight the team’s frustrations with the current trajectory, especially following the high expectations set with the arrival of Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers himself faces an uncertain future with the team as this season’s challenges mount. The decision to fire Douglas, who played a key role in assembling the team’s current roster, may further complicate his tenure with the Jets. Under Douglas’ leadership, the team had seen some draft successes, particularly in 2022 with the acquisition of key players like Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Jermaine Johnson, and Breece Hall. However, the hopeful resurgence has not materialized this season.
As the Jets head into their bye week before hosting the Seattle Seahawks on December 1, the organization clearly aims to regroup and reassess its strategy moving forward. This includes not just personnel changes but also potentially redefining their approach to team building and player acquisition.
