Donald Trump has announced that he will appoint Karoline Leavitt, his campaign spokeswoman, as the White House press secretary if he wins again. At just 27 years old, she’ll be the youngest person to ever hold this position.
Trump shared in a statement that he’s confident Leavitt will do a great job at the podium, helping to communicate his message to the American people as part of his “Make America Great Again” mission. He called her smart, tough, and an effective communicator.
Leavitt, originally from New Hampshire, studied communications and political science at Saint Anselm College. While still in college, she interned at Fox News and in the White House press office, which sparked her interest in press relations. She later worked in Trump’s first administration, starting as a presidential writer and eventually becoming assistant press secretary.
After leaving the White House, Leavitt worked as the communications director for Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, another Republican leader Trump has nominated for a role in his administration. Leavitt also ran for Congress in 2022 but lost in the general election.
Now, in January 2024, Leavitt has joined Trump’s campaign again, this time as the press secretary. If Trump wins, she’ll become the youngest person ever to hold the job. The previous record holder was Ron Ziegler, who was 29 when he was appointed by President Nixon in 1969.
Leavitt is set to step up to the iconic podium in the White House briefing room, following in the footsteps of previous press secretaries like Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and Kayleigh McEnany. We’ll soon see how she handles the press and whether she can make her mark like the others before her.
