A heartbreaking tragedy has unfolded in Lake Charles, Louisiana, where a babysitter has been arrested for allegedly killing a 3-month-old baby while watching him for just a few hours. The child’s mother, Symone Anderson, returned home to find her son, Kairo Anderson, unresponsive after suffering severe injuries, including multiple skull fractures and a massive brain bleed, authorities say.
Anderson had asked 40-year-old Shirley L. Sawyer to look after her baby on January 22. When she came back to pick him up, she initially thought he was asleep. But moments later, she realized something was terribly wrong—her baby was limp and not waking up. Panicked, she rushed him to the hospital, where doctors confirmed the worst.
Doctors told investigators that Kairo’s injuries were consistent with trauma, meaning he had been physically harmed. He was later airlifted to another hospital for urgent care, but tragically, he did not survive.
“I’ve known this woman for a while, and I just can’t believe it,” Anderson told the media. “She smiled in my face and then did this to my baby behind my back.”
Authorities conducted a thorough investigation and, on February 3, issued a warrant for Sawyer’s arrest. On Tuesday, she was taken into custody and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on a charge of first-degree murder. As of Thursday, she remains in jail with a bond set at $2.5 million.
This devastating case has left the community in shock, as family and friends mourn the loss of baby Kairo. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to ensure justice is served.
