A man was arrested Monday after a loaded handgun was found in the parking lot of Monona Grove High School in Monona, Wisconsin.
The incident happened around 6:50 p.m. when someone spotted the 9mm handgun with a loaded magazine and reported it to the Monona Police Department. School officials and police immediately started looking into the situation. The School Resource Officer checked the security cameras and saw a man riding his bike through the parking lot, close to where the gun was discovered.
A little while later, police tracked down the man on his bicycle near E Coldspring Avenue and Monona Drive. When questioned, the man admitted he had accidentally dropped his handgun while riding through the school parking lot. He told officers he was circling back, trying to find it.
Here’s the problem: the 33-year-old man is a convicted felon, meaning he’s not allowed to have a gun in the first place. On top of that, he was allegedly intoxicated. Police arrested him for illegally possessing a firearm and for bringing a handgun onto school grounds.
Authorities quickly assured the community that the man had no connection to Monona Grove High School and was simply passing through. They confirmed there was no danger to the school or its students.
While the situation ended safely, it was a close call that had everyone on alert.
