In a shocking turn of events, Rene Salmeron, 32, led Las Vegas police on a dangerous high-speed chase after allegedly stealing a car on Dec. 19. The pursuit ended when Salmeron crashed into a Metro police SUV near Eastern Avenue and Charleston Boulevard.
This wasn’t his first run-in with law enforcement—just seven weeks earlier, Salmeron had been arrested for DUI and driving a stolen vehicle in the same area. However, charges were never filed in that case, allowing him to walk free.
After the Dec. 19 incident, Salmeron’s reckless behavior continued. Police documents revealed that during the chase, he drove onto a sidewalk and later collided with two vehicles, including the police cruiser. Despite being asked about the stolen car and his actions, Salmeron simply said, “I’m going back to prison.”
Prosecutors had yet to file charges from the previous arrest, which led to Salmeron being released. After his latest arrest, a judge set his bail at $10,000. An arraignment is scheduled for Jan. 13. Thankfully, no officers were injured in the crash, but the incident highlights the ongoing issue of repeat offenders and the need for stricter intervention.
This case serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by those who continuously flout the law, leaving local authorities on high alert.
