A massive wildfire in southern Miami-Dade County has forced the closure of the 18-Mile Stretch, the main road connecting the Florida Keys to the mainland. This marks the third straight day that the road has been shut down, causing major travel disruptions for both locals and visitors.
Fire Grows to 24,000 Acres
The wildfire, which started earlier this week, has now spread to 24,000 acres and is only 30% contained, according to the Florida Forest Service. Strong winds and dry conditions have made it difficult for firefighters to bring the blaze under control.
Dangerous Conditions and Travel Disruptions
The 18-Mile Stretch was briefly closed on Wednesday but remained shut down for several hours on Tuesday. Officials haven’t given an estimate for when it will reopen on Thursday.
Adding to the concern, NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has issued wildfire alerts for most of the eastern Florida Peninsula. Millions of people in Orlando, Melbourne, West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami are at risk as fire conditions remain critical.
Firefighters Battle the Flames
Firefighters have been working tirelessly to control the blaze. Videos shared by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue show emergency crews driving through thick smoke and flames while helicopters drop water from above. Officials warn that the smoke could spread into nearby neighborhoods, affecting air quality.
Spring Break Travelers Affected
Many people are visiting Florida for spring break, adding to the challenges caused by the fire. Meteorologists have warned both residents and tourists to stay alert and avoid outdoor burning to prevent more fires from starting.
Weather Conditions Make Fire Worse
The FOX Forecast Center explains that a cold front moving across the U.S. is bringing strong winds and dry air to Florida. Since there has been little rain in recent weeks, the wildfire is spreading rapidly. If another fire starts, it could grow out of control quickly.
Warnings in Place
Fire Weather Warnings have been issued for multiple counties along Florida’s east coast, including areas along Interstate 95 from Daytona Beach to Miami.
Stay Updated
Authorities urge residents and travelers to stay informed about road closures and air quality warnings. Firefighters will continue working to contain the fire, but caution is advised until conditions improve.
