Health officials have warned travelers about a possible measles exposure at JFK Airport after an infected child from China passed through the terminal. The child arrived in New York on February 25 before traveling to Philadelphia. Later, they tested positive for measles, a highly contagious disease that can be deadly.
Timeline of Exposure
The Pennsylvania health department reported that the child landed at JFK Airport in New York City and left Terminal 4 on a shuttle bus at around 9:30 p.m. They arrived in Philadelphia at Pho Ha Saigon restaurant (575 Adams Avenue) at about 3:15 a.m. The next morning, between 11:45 a.m. and 3 p.m., they visited True North Pediatrics Associates of Plymouth and CHOP King of Prussia Campus Emergency Department. Officials have urged people who were at these locations during those times to watch for symptoms.
How Measles Spreads
According to Montgomery County health officials, the measles virus can remain in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. If someone breathes contaminated air or touches an infected surface and then touches their face, they could get infected.
Measles Outbreak Across the U.S.
The CDC has reported measles outbreaks in several states, including Alaska, California, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York City, Rhode Island, and Texas. This outbreak has raised concerns, especially after a child in Texas died from the disease, marking the first U.S. measles-related death in a decade.
Warning Against ‘Measles Parties’
Texas health officials have also warned parents against intentionally exposing their children to measles at so-called “measles parties.” Dr. Ron Cook, a health expert at Texas Tech University, said such gatherings are dangerous and unpredictable. He warned that some children may develop severe complications like pneumonia, brain infections, or even death.
At a press briefing, U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett emphasized the dangers of measles, stating: “Measles can kill. Ignorance can kill. Vaccine denial definitely kills.” While there is no solid proof that measles parties are widespread, officials have urged parents not to take risks.
What to Do if You Were Exposed
Passengers who may have been in contact with the infected child should look for symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash. The best protection against measles is vaccination. Health experts strongly advise people to ensure they are up to date on their vaccines to prevent further spread of the disease.
