In Minneapolis, a 58-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder following a deadly stabbing near Nicollet Mall. The incident happened late on December 23, just before midnight, near the intersection of Nicollet Mall and Fifth Street South.
Police officers responding to the scene found a man in his 30s bleeding heavily from a stab wound, lying close to a Metro Transit bus. Emergency responders rushed him to the hospital, but sadly, he passed away from his injuries on Friday.
According to court documents, officers used surveillance cameras to track and arrest the suspect, who was carrying a knife at the time of his arrest. A bus driver on Nicollet Mall told investigators he saw two people fighting, followed by the victim collapsing next to the bus. Another witness reported hearing the victim say he had been stabbed before falling to the ground.
The surveillance footage paints a grim picture of what happened. It shows the suspect and the victim at a nearby bus shelter, where the older man allegedly pulled something from his hip and swung it at the victim’s face. The victim tried to back away, but the man reportedly followed him and continued to attack. The video shows the victim in a defensive stance as the suspect struck him multiple times before riding away on a bike.
The accused later told investigators that he intervened after seeing the victim acting aggressively toward a woman at the bus shelter. According to his statement, he stepped between the woman and the victim, claiming that the victim hit him first and then accidentally “impaled himself” while trying to attack again.
The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. This tragic incident has left many in the community shaken, especially those who frequent the Nicollet Mall area.
