House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) had big plans for Donald Trump’s upcoming inauguration. He promised to raise the flags at the United States Capitol to full staff, a gesture to honor the occasion. However, there’s a small hiccup in the plan— the cold weather is making it tricky.
According to Olivia Beavers from the Wall Street Journal, the cords on the flagpoles are frozen due to the chilly temperatures, which is making it harder than expected to raise the flags.
The flags were previously lowered to honor former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away late last year at the age of 100.
But when Trump raised concerns about the symbolism of flags being at half-staff during his second inauguration, Speaker Johnson made a promise to bring them back up to full staff by January 20th.
At the time of writing, Washington D.C. is facing a chilly 24°F, and Trump, knowing the freezing weather, opted to move his inauguration indoors to stay warm.
So, while the flags may be stuck for now, it looks like the inauguration will still go on, just with a few extra layers of planning—and maybe a little more heat!
