Obama Calls Out His Own Campaign Rhetoric as a ‘Scam’ in Surprising Moment with Trump

Share news:

It’s not every day you see former President Barack Obama and ex-President Donald Trump sharing a smile and a laugh. But that’s exactly what happened Thursday at the funeral for former President Jimmy Carter, where the two men shared a surprisingly friendly moment, leaving many to reflect on the dramatic contrast between their past campaign exchanges and this unexpected interaction.

During last year’s campaign, Obama didn’t hold back in criticizing Trump, calling him a “wannabe dictator” and even drawing comparisons to Hitler. But on Thursday, it was all smiles and casual banter. The moment, captured at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., was a stark contrast to the heated rhetoric from their earlier political battles.

Kaitlan Collins from CNN commented on the rare nature of the encounter, calling it a moment that “you do not see, hardly ever.” Even CNN’s Jeff Zeleny agreed, noting how “extraordinary” it was, while also acknowledging how these two presidencies, despite their differences, were still linked.

A side-by-side comparison posted on X (formerly Twitter) showed the sharp contrast: Obama’s fiery remarks from a rally in Georgia last October, where he warned about Trump’s “wannabe dictator” tendencies, were matched against the smiling exchange they shared just this week.

Back in October, Obama had said at a rally, “General John Kelly, Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, said that Trump told him that he wanted his generals to be like Hitler’s generals.” He added, “In politics, a good rule of thumb is don’t say you want to do anything like Hitler.”

But fast forward to Thursday, and the two men were sharing a moment of genuine camaraderie, laughing together in a way that seemed far removed from the heated political arguments of the past.

Some took to social media to point out the surprising shift. One user called Obama’s past rhetoric a “scam,” while others questioned the sincerity of the harsh things said during the campaign, now contrasted by the laughter between the two men. Conservative commentator Kyle Becker remarked on the “horrible things the Democratic Party was saying about Trump during the 2024 campaign.”

It’s worth noting that Obama was echoing some of Vice President Kamala Harris’s remarks from the same time period. Harris had quoted John Kelly, suggesting that Trump fit the “general definition of fascist,” something that sparked heated debate on both sides.

While Obama’s comments were certainly aimed at painting Trump as a dangerous figure, especially without the moderating influence of figures like General Kelly, the friendly encounter on Thursday seems to suggest that, at least in private, the animosity wasn’t as deep as it seemed on the campaign trail.

In the end, Thursday’s exchange raises questions about the gap between political rhetoric and personal interactions. While Obama had used stark language about Trump’s leadership and potential for harm, it appears that, at least in this instance, the two could laugh it off. And that, in itself, might be the most telling part of the story.
