An Ohio father, Rob Healey, confronted his son’s killer in court, calling him the “scum of the earth.” His son, Ryan Healey, a 25-year-old bartender, was shot and killed in Over-the-Rhine, Cincinnati, in April 2023. The shooter, Anjuan Marion, was 16 at the time but has since turned 18. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter and gun charges related to a different shooting months later.
Ryan was shot in the chest while walking near his home. As he lay on the ground, someone stole his wallet. Marion, who was in a vehicle at the time of the shooting, did not explain his actions in court. He only said, “I want to say I’m sorry.” As part of a plea deal, he was sentenced to up to 14 and a half years in prison.
During the sentencing, Rob Healey gave an emotional statement, expressing his anger and heartbreak. He called Marion a “sociopath” and a “pathetic excuse for a human being.” He also questioned Marion’s sense of power, asking, “Are you the one in charge of deciding life or death when you’re wielding a firearm?”
Rob Healey described how his wife’s grief had become unbearable, leaving her too depressed and afraid to leave their home. He told the court that no prison sentence would be long enough for Marion and added, “I hope he lives in pain and suffering for the rest of his life.”
Ryan Healey was remembered as a kind and outgoing person. His obituary described him as a proud “Ambassador of Cincinnati” who loved making people smile, cooking, and spending time with friends. Many friends and loved ones shared their condolences, calling him a “genuine, kind, and vibrant person.” One friend said, “Ryan was witty, grounded, and the funniest person I knew.” Another shared, “Ryan was a great soul and a great friend. He always helped me whenever I needed it.”
Originally charged as a juvenile, Marion was later moved to adult court. The judge approved the plea deal but acknowledged that justice in cases like this can feel “bittersweet.”
Ryan’s tragic death left a deep impact on his family, friends, and community. His father’s heartbreaking words in court reflected the pain of losing a son to violence. Although Marion has been sentenced, the grief and loss remain for those who loved Ryan.
