A police chase through Brooklyn, New York, ended tragically when a man was killed, a woman was hurt, and a baby was rescued unharmed.
What Happened:
It all started on Thursday, Dec. 6, when a gunshot detection system alerted the NYPD to possible gunfire in the Crown Heights area. Officers rushed to the scene and got a tip about a suspicious car with an out-of-state license plate barely hanging on.
The police spotted the car near Fulton Street and Washington Avenue. When the driver, a young woman, saw the cops, she sped off, running red lights and weaving through traffic. Officers chased the car through busy streets until it got stuck in traffic.
The Shootout:
With the car trapped, police surrounded it. Suddenly, a man in the passenger seat tried to get out but couldn’t fully open the door. Officers saw he had a gun and pointed it at them, triggering a shootout.
Police fired 18 to 19 shots while shouting instructions to drop the weapon. During the chaos, the woman driving the car jumped out and tried to run. That’s when officers noticed a baby girl in the backseat.
One officer yelled, “Baby, baby!” urging others to stop shooting. An officer then rushed in and carefully took the little girl out of the car.
What We Know Now:
The woman, 23, was caught after a short chase. She had two gunshot wounds in her right thigh and was taken to the hospital along with the baby, who was thankfully unharmed.
The man in the passenger seat, 21, was wanted in connection with a murder case from earlier this year. He was shot during the incident and died after police tried to save him.
Authorities found a semi-automatic gun with a 30-round capacity at the scene. It’s still unclear if the man ever fired his weapon.
The woman hasn’t been officially charged yet, but police say she broke several traffic laws and didn’t have a car seat for the child.
