Severe Weather Strikes U.S. Coasts: Flash Floods in California and Heavy Snow in Northeast

Share news:

On November 21, 2024, the United States faced significant weather challenges on both coasts. In Northern California, a major storm brought heavy rain and snow, leading to flash floods and rockslides. The National Weather Service extended a flood watch into Saturday for areas north of San Francisco due to the strongest atmospheric river of the season.

Up to 16 inches of rain were forecasted in Northern California and southwestern Oregon through Friday. By Wednesday evening, Santa Rosa had received about 5 inches of rain within 24 hours. Approximately a dozen small landslides occurred in Northern California, causing transportation disruptions.

In the Northeast, a powerful winter storm brought heavy snowfall, disrupting travel and daily activities. The storm system was expected to bring widespread snow and strong winds to the Dakotas and the Upper Midwest, with winter weather alerts and warnings issued in several areas. Snow totals could range from a dusting to over a foot in certain regions, with hazardous travel conditions anticipated along major highways.

Meteorologists attribute these extreme weather events to a combination of atmospheric conditions, including a bomb cyclone impacting the West Coast and a nor’easter affecting the Northeast. These phenomena underscore the necessity for preparedness and prompt response to natural disasters.

Residents in affected regions are urged to stay informed through official channels and to follow safety guidelines to mitigate risks associated with these severe weather conditions.
