Shark Alert! U.S. Map Reveals the Most Dangerous Waters

Share news:

A recent study has revealed that the United States had the highest number of unprovoked shark attacks in the world in 2024. According to data from the International Shark Attack File, managed by the Florida Museum of Natural History and the University of Florida, the U.S. recorded 28 confirmed shark bites last year. This accounted for around 60% of all attacks worldwide.

Florida was the most affected state, with half of the attacks occurring in its waters. Volusia County, located northeast of Orlando, had the highest number of incidents, earning the title of the “shark attack capital” of the U.S. In 2024, at least eight attacks were recorded in this area alone.

Why Are There So Many Shark Attacks in Florida?

Florida’s waters are home to various shark species, including blacktip sharks, bull sharks, and tiger sharks. Blacktip sharks, which prefer shallow waters, are common in Florida and may mistakenly bite humans, confusing them with prey. Meanwhile, bull sharks and tiger sharks, known for their aggressive nature, also roam near Florida’s Panhandle, increasing the risk of encounters.

Though shark attacks are rare, beachgoers are advised to take precautions when swimming or surfing. However, since the ocean is a shark’s natural habitat, humans often provoke them unknowingly by entering their territory.

Recent Shark Attack Cases

One notable shark attack happened in October 2024 when Cole Taschman, an experienced surfer, was bitten while surfing at Bathtub Beach in Stuart, Florida. He had also been attacked by a shark 12 years earlier. This time, the bite was severe, requiring 93 stitches. Fortunately, his injuries were not life-threatening.

The U.S. recorded four fatal shark attacks in 2024. Among the victims was Tamayo Perry, a well-known surfer and actor. The 49-year-old, who starred in Pirates of the Caribbean, was attacked while surfing near Goat Island in Oahu, Hawaii. He lost an arm and a leg in the attack and was pronounced dead after being brought to shore.

Global Shark Attack Trends

After the U.S., Australia had the second-highest number of shark attacks, with nine reported incidents in 2024. One tragic case involved a 17-year-old who lost their life after being attacked near Bribie Island, close to Brisbane.

According to the study, bull sharks were responsible for the most attacks, with 15 incidents recorded between 2023 and 2024, including two fatalities. Tiger sharks followed with 11 attacks and two deaths, while great white sharks caused 10 attacks, also resulting in two fatalities.

By understanding shark behavior and taking precautions, beachgoers can reduce their risk of encountering these powerful predators.
