Maria Margarita Rojas, 48, a Houston-area midwife, has been arrested for allegedly performing illegal abortions, making it the first criminal case under Texas’ strict abortion ban. Known as “Dr. Maria,” Rojas faces charges of performing an abortion, a second-degree felony, and practicing medicine without a license.
Authorities say Rojas operated a network of clinics in the suburbs of Waller, Cypress, and Spring, employing unlicensed individuals who falsely posed as medical professionals. Rojas herself is accused of directly performing the illegal procedures, violating the Texas Human Life Protection Act, which bans most abortions except in certain circumstances.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton confirmed that the state’s law, which criminalizes abortion providers, would be enforced. “We will hold those who violate our pro-life laws fully accountable,” Paxton stated.
The arrest has drawn attention from both pro-choice and pro-life advocates. John Seago, president of Texas Right to Life, praised the action, asserting that illegal abortion providers have increasingly turned to underground methods.
The case was referred to Paxton’s office by Waller County District Attorney Sean Whittmore, who emphasized that the county stands firm in its commitment to enforcing Texas’ abortion laws.
This arrest marks a significant moment in the state’s ongoing efforts to curb illegal abortions following its controversial near-total ban.
