Authorities in Maui are investigating an explosion that occurred Thursday night at a beach resort, injuring multiple people and sending several to the hospital.
What Happened?
The explosion happened around 6:15 p.m. (HST) at a condominium complex on Kaanapali Beach, located on the northwest side of the Hawaiian island, according to the Maui Police Department. The affected area is about a 40-minute drive from Kahului, Maui’s capital.
At least seven people, aged between 18 and 74, suffered injuries. Three were critically hurt, and one person had to be airlifted to a hospital for urgent medical care.
Emergency responders arrived at The Whaler Resort on Kā‘anapali Parkway after receiving reports of a serious accident.
Possible Cause of the Explosion
Preliminary investigations suggest that the explosion may have been caused by a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leak. LPG is commonly used to fuel BBQ grills in shared areas. Witnesses reported seeing a possible grill malfunction before the blast occurred.
Despite the explosion, officials did not order evacuations from the area.
Witness Accounts
David Flint, a witness, told Hawaii News Now that he was swimming at a nearby Sheraton hotel pool when he heard a loud explosion.
“There was this huge, earth-shaking boom,” he said. “It’s a really crowded area, so it was pretty scary. It felt surreal.”
Authorities Ask Public to Avoid the Area
Police have asked people to stay away while they continue their investigation. Photos shared by local news outlets show first responders helping victims near the beach.
Officials will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
