Lake Station police responded to a welfare check at a home on the 6700 block of 9th Avenue around 2:44 p.m. Upon entering the residence, officers discovered the bodies of five individuals, including a mother, father, and their three children.

The victims were identified as:
- Briana Payne, 27
- Aurorah Payne, 7
- Ava Payne, 6
- Alayna Payne, 4
- Robert Payne, 31
According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, Briana and the three children all died from gunshot wounds, and their deaths have been ruled homicides. Robert Payne also died from gunshot wounds, but his death has been ruled a suicide.
