A Florida mother is facing serious charges after being accused of killing her 4-month-old baby. Johnisha Cole, 32, was arrested last Friday by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office following a heartbreaking investigation into her infant’s death.
It all began in September when deputies were called to Cole’s home after a report that a baby was choking and had passed out. The little one was rushed to the hospital, but tragically, doctors couldn’t save her. According to the sheriff’s office, the baby’s injuries were severe, and the medical examiner later determined the death was no accident—it was ruled a homicide.
Detectives working the case said the baby had endured unimaginable harm. Her injuries included broken ribs, a fractured femur, widespread bruises, and severe swelling in her abdomen. The medical examiner concluded the baby died from abusive head trauma. When questioned, investigators said Cole couldn’t explain how her baby ended up so badly hurt.
Things took a darker turn when detectives examined Cole’s phone and internet searches. According to authorities, she had looked up things like “How long do you have to make a police report?” and “How to sign away parental rights?” Even more disturbing, police say she sent text messages suggesting she wanted the baby to die and even admitted to shaking her.
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno didn’t hold back when addressing the case. “This baby suffered unthinkable abuse her entire life. My heart breaks for this child, but my detectives worked tirelessly to gather evidence and make an arrest. Now, we’ll push to make sure justice is served,” he said.
Cole is now charged with manslaughter and aggravated child abuse. She’s being held without bail and is scheduled to appear in court on January 13. Authorities say they are committed to ensuring she is held accountable for this tragic loss.
