A young mother from North Lawndale has been taken into custody for the tragic death of her 5-month-old son.
Tamyra Anderson, 20, is facing serious charges after authorities linked her to the abuse and death of her infant, Marquis Johnson Jr. According to prosecutors and the Cook County medical examiner’s office, the baby was found unresponsive on November 21 at their home on South Millard Avenue.
Medical reports later revealed that Marquis had suffered multiple injuries, including head trauma, detached retinas, bruises, an acute brain bleed, and cardiac arrest. Due to these severe injuries, he passed away on November 28. The medical examiner’s office ruled his death as a homicide, indicating it was caused by abuse.
Investigators claim that Anderson had been physically abusive toward the baby for a period of time. Court documents state that she had “violently handled” him. The baby’s father also reportedly witnessed her shaking, throwing, and roughly handling their child.
Authorities arrested Anderson at her home on Thursday. She has been charged with two felony counts of murder.
She appeared in court on Saturday, where a judge ordered that she remain in custody. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable children from harm. If you or someone you know is struggling with parenting stress or needs help, there are resources available to provide support and guidance.
