A tragic crash in North Las Vegas early Sunday morning left one woman dead and sent several others to the hospital, with a driver now facing serious charges. The accident happened around 2:48 a.m. at the intersection of Tropical Parkway and North 5th Street.
The North Las Vegas Police Department said the crash involved a black Jeep Cherokee and a gray Chrysler 200. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two people from the Chrysler—an adult woman and a man—lying on the road. Sadly, the woman was pronounced dead on the spot, while the man suffered critical injuries.
Two more people from the Chrysler, including the driver and a front passenger, were also hurt. They were rushed to UMC Trauma. Thankfully, doctors have since upgraded one of their conditions to stable.
The driver of the Jeep Cherokee, identified as 30-year-old Bria Standley, didn’t stick around. She ran off on foot but was later found in a nearby park and arrested. Police charged her with multiple crimes, including DUI resulting in death, DUI causing serious injuries, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and failing to help those injured.
According to investigators, the Chrysler 200 was making a left turn on a green arrow when the Jeep Cherokee, speeding eastbound on Tropical Parkway, blew through a red light and smashed into the car. Witnesses told police they saw the Jeep speeding and suspected the driver might have been impaired.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office is working to identify the woman who lost her life and will determine the official cause and manner of death.
This tragic incident is a reminder of the dangers of reckless and impaired driving. The North Las Vegas Police Department’s Major Collision Investigation Unit is handling the case.
