Two teenage girls from Texas were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly planning a violent attack on Memorial High School in Houston. Authorities say the girls, aged 15 and 16, intended to plant bombs around the school and use guns to harm students and teachers in what could have been a major tragedy.
The FBI, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Spring Branch ISD Police Department acted quickly after discovering online threats. Just 30 minutes after being alerted, officers arrested both teenagers.
The 16-year-old, a student at Memorial High School, was taken into custody inside the school’s hallway. She has been charged with making a terroristic threat, which is considered a third-degree felony. The 15-year-old attends Willis High School and has not yet been charged in connection to the attack but is being held on unrelated charges.
Authorities believe the girls were still in the early stages of planning their attack. The FBI’s Houston office described the situation as a “mass casualty plot” in a statement on social media.
Although the suspects’ names have not been released, officials assure the public that there is no current threat to the community. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has taken extra security measures to ensure students, teachers, and parents feel safe.
“We understand that this situation is concerning for students, parents, and staff. We are doing everything possible to protect everyone, working closely with school officials and law enforcement partners to maintain a secure environment,” the sheriff’s office stated.
Thanks to the swift action of authorities, a potential tragedy was prevented before it could happen.
