NATIONAL CITY, CA — Authorities have arrested a man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of a 54-year-old woman early Saturday morning.
National City Police Department (NCPD) officers responded to the 1600 block of East Plaza Boulevard at approximately 2:12 a.m. after receiving reports of a person lying in the street. Upon arrival, officers discovered the woman unresponsive in the center divider of the roadway. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by police, firefighters, and paramedics, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators quickly determined that the woman was the victim of a hit-and-run collision. Debris found at the site, along with witness accounts, led officers to a damaged vehicle in the 600 block of East 18th Street. Authorities confirmed that the damage was consistent with a pedestrian-involved crash.
The driver, identified as 27-year-old Jamal Dekwon Lee, was taken into custody and booked into the county jail. He faces multiple charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing death or great bodily injury, and felony hit-and-run resulting in death or injury.
The victim’s identity has not been released, pending notification of her family.
