President Trump has announced that the United States has captured the terrorist responsible for the deadly bombing outside Kabul airport during the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. This attack claimed the lives of 13 American service members and many Afghan civilians.
Speaking to Congress, Trump reminded the nation of the tragic event that occurred at Abbey Gate, where ISIS terrorists carried out a suicide bombing. “Three and a half years ago, ISIS terrorists killed 13 brave American service members and countless others in the Abbey Gate bombing,” he said. “Tonight, I am pleased to announce that we have just apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that atrocity. He is now on his way to the United States to face justice.”
Trump expressed his gratitude to the Pakistani government for their assistance in capturing the terrorist, calling it “a very momentous day” for the families of the fallen soldiers. These families, known as Gold Star families, have maintained a strong bond with Trump since the attack. Some of them even visited Arlington National Cemetery last Memorial Day to honor their loved ones.
Shortly after Trump’s announcement, FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed on social media that the extradition of the ISIS-K terrorist was a collaborative effort involving the FBI, the Department of Justice (DOJ), and the CIA. “One step closer to justice for these American heroes and their families,” Patel stated.
The Kabul airport attack occurred during the final days of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. As American troops and diplomats evacuated, the Taliban freed thousands of prisoners, including ISIS terrorists, from Afghan jails. One of these terrorists, Abdul Rahman al-Logari, was later identified as the suicide bomber responsible for the attack. He carried 20 pounds of explosives and ball bearings, causing mass casualties.
It is not yet confirmed whether al-Logari is the same terrorist now in U.S. custody. However, Trump’s announcement signals a major development in holding those responsible accountable. The attack resulted in the deaths of 170 Afghan civilians, in addition to the 13 U.S. service members.
On the campaign trail, Trump had vowed to fire all military officials involved in the “disastrous” withdrawal. While he has not yet taken action, he hinted that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth should prioritize accountability. “I’m not telling him what to do, but if I were in his place, I’d fire every single one of them,” Trump said.
Hegseth has since promised a full review of the events surrounding the withdrawal and assured that those responsible will face consequences.
