The White House is strongly criticizing House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries after he called for Democrats to fight President Trump’s agenda “in the streets.”
White House deputy press secretary Kush Desai responded to Jeffries’ comments, saying, “While President Trump is focused on uniting the country and delivering the mandate set by the American people, Leader Jeffries is encouraging violence with his rhetoric. He should apologize immediately.”
Jeffries made the remarks during a press conference in Brooklyn on Friday, where he criticized President Trump’s handling of a deadly plane crash in Washington, D.C., and his policies freezing federal funds. At one point, Jeffries was asked about New York City Mayor Eric Adams and his lack of opposition to Trump. Jeffries chose not to comment on Adams directly but hinted that he would address the issue later.
Jeffries continued by saying, “Right now, we’re focused on protecting everyday Americans from the extreme MAGA Republican agenda, which is trying to cut taxes for the rich and leave hardworking people with the bill. This is unacceptable. We will fight it legislatively, in the courts, and in the streets.”
Republican leaders quickly condemned Jeffries’ words, accusing him of using dangerous language in an already heated political climate. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer called on Jeffries to apologize for his “inflammatory and extreme rhetoric,” stating that Republicans, including Trump, are focused on uniting the country. He added that Jeffries should stop trying to divide it further.
Jeffries’ spokesperson, Christie Stephenson, responded to the criticism, saying, “The idea that Leader Jeffries supports violence is ridiculous. Republicans are the ones who pardon violent felons, while Democrats stand for peaceful protest, like John Lewis did.” She clarified that Jeffries’ comments referred to nonviolent protests.
Republicans continued their criticism, with Rep. Randy Feenstra of Iowa emphasizing that more than 77 million Americans voted for Trump’s agenda, supporting secure borders, a strong economy, and safe communities.
The situation highlights the tension between Democrats and Republicans as the political battle over Trump’s agenda and policies intensifies. While Jeffries clarifies his stance on nonviolent protests, the language used has sparked significant backlash from Republicans.
