Early Thursday morning, President-elect Donald Trump took to Truth Social to make a bold statement: “TRUMP WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING.” His claim came after a series of comments linking the recent New Orleans truck attack to migrants, which turned out to be completely off the mark.
Trump had initially suggested that the attack, which occurred on Bourbon Street, was tied to the open-border policies he often criticizes. He wrote, “Our Country is a disaster, a laughing stock all over the World!” and blamed weak leadership for creating what he called an unsafe situation with “OPEN BORDERS.”
However, his statement didn’t match the facts.
The attack was carried out by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. Army veteran from Texas, not a migrant, as Trump implied. Authorities quickly clarified that there was no connection to immigration or the border. In fact, the truck used in the attack had entered the U.S. from Mexico over a month earlier, on November 16—well before the incident took place on New Year’s Day.
Trump had earlier tried to back his comments by referencing a Fox News report, which had incorrectly suggested that the vehicle came across the border just days before the attack. The news outlet has since retracted the story.
The attack, which tragically killed 15 people and injured many others, is being investigated as an act of terrorism. The FBI found an ISIS flag on the vehicle and is working to explore Jabbar’s potential links to terrorist organizations.
While Trump’s comments were widely disputed, he continued to insist on his narrative, repeating that the crime rate in the U.S. is at an all-time high and reinforcing his belief that the border is to blame. Yet, with no evidence linking the tragedy to migration or the border, his remarks seem more about political points than reality.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the victims and their families, along with the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department. Meanwhile, Trump’s online rhetoric continues to stir debate, with many questioning the facts behind his claims.
