The issue isn’t just the Panama Canal itself. It’s about China’s growing influence across the globe, from Canada and Greenland to the Drake Passage at the southern tip of the world. And guess what? China is the common link.
This isn’t a throwback to old-school U.S. military conquests. What we’re seeing today is the 21st-century version of the Monroe Doctrine – a warning to keep your hands off! And it comes at a time when China is pushing harder than ever to make its mark globally.
What’s China Doing?
China is aiming to control key trade routes and choke points that are critical to U.S. naval and maritime operations. They’re not just playing the economic game – they’re building a military presence, too.
Take the Belt and Road Initiative. On the surface, it’s an economic project, worth over a trillion dollars. But there’s a darker side – it’s also a clever strategy to create the infrastructure needed to support China’s growing military ambitions. And don’t forget, this project is global.
A prime example? In Djibouti, China opened its first overseas military base in 2018, just a stone’s throw from a U.S. base in Africa. It’s not just about access to resources. It’s about securing military power, and China’s expanding its reach in places like the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, where crucial trade routes are at stake.
The Panama Canal and China’s Plans
Here’s where the Panama Canal comes in. China has already made significant investments in the canal area, with companies like Landbridge Group and CK Hutchison Holdings running ports at both ends. They’re eyeing economic control over this vital waterway, which could give them more leverage over the U.S.
But it’s not just the Panama Canal – China is making moves in Greenland and the Arctic, too. With global warming opening up the Northern Sea Route, China’s now partnering with Russia on the Polar Silk Road, a new initiative targeting the Arctic. That’s putting U.S. security at risk in regions we’re woefully underprepared for.
The South American Threat
And then, there’s South America. Did you know China has been eyeing the southern tip of the continent? Specifically, they’re trying to build military installations near Ushuaia, the southernmost city in Argentina. If that happens, China could control the Strait of Magellan, blocking key trade routes and gaining military dominance in the region.
What Does This All Mean for the U.S.?
At the end of the day, China is challenging the U.S. on our own turf. It’s happening right under our noses, and the question is: Do we have the resolve to confront them? Whether it’s protecting the Panama Canal, securing Arctic waters, or preventing military bases in South America, China’s ambitions aren’t just a distant threat anymore – they’re at our doorstep.
