It seems President-elect Donald Trump is keeping everyone guessing when it comes to his strategy for passing key legislation in the coming weeks. One minute, he’s giving the green light to House Speaker Mike Johnson’s idea of rolling everything into one big budget package. The next, he’s telling right-wing talk show host Hugh Hewitt that he’s open to other options.
This back-and-forth is raising eyebrows and giving us a glimpse of what could be a rocky road ahead in Trump’s second term. As Politico points out, his decision-making can be a bit unpredictable, which could leave Republicans scrambling to figure out exactly what he wants.
Republican Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) summed it up perfectly: just saying he’s “fine” with different approaches isn’t enough to get things done. “We need a clear plan,” he said.
Senators from the GOP side are also looking to the House to take charge, arguing that they want to see if Speaker Johnson can gather the necessary 218 votes to pass anything. “This is going to start in the House, because we’re focused on nominations,” explained Senator John Curtis (R-UT). “But if they can’t get it done, then we’ll figure out another approach.”
Meanwhile, Democrats are sitting back and watching it all unfold. Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA) had some sarcastic words for the situation: “Good luck! I think Donald Trump agrees with whoever he talks to last. That’s why you have the ‘one bill, two bills’ debate. You can’t really start negotiations if you don’t know which direction you’re going.”
Looks like we’ll have to wait and see which way Trump decides to go!
