After a distinguished tenure, U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy, known for his high-profile cases and commitment to justice, will be stepping down before President-elect Donald Trump takes office. Levy, who took charge after Rachael Rollins resigned, submitted his resignation to Attorney General Merrick Garland on Monday. His final day will be January 17.
A New Chapter for the District of Massachusetts
It’s common for U.S. Attorneys to resign with the inauguration of a new president, as the incoming leader appoints a new head of the office. In Levy’s absence, Mary Murrane, the First Assistant U.S. Attorney and a 16-year veteran of the Department of Justice, will step up as Acting U.S. Attorney.
A Focus on Major Issues
During Levy’s time in office, some of his team’s biggest priorities included fighting human trafficking, tackling fraud, and addressing the opioid crisis. Levy expressed his pride in the work done over the past three years, emphasizing the dedication of his team to protect communities and uphold civil rights.
“Serving as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts has truly been the highlight of my career,” Levy shared. “Every day, I witnessed firsthand the extraordinary efforts of federal prosecutors, support staff, and law enforcement working tirelessly to keep our communities safe.”
A Track Record of Prominent Cases
Levy’s leadership saw several significant cases, from holding Stoughton police officer Matthew Farwell accountable in the death of Sandra Birchmore, to securing a historic $650 million settlement against McKinsey & Company for their role in Purdue Pharma’s opioid crisis. His office also brought charges against two individuals involved in a plot to procure sensitive drone technology for Iran, which led to the deaths of three U.S. soldiers.
One of the most notable cases was the conviction of Jack Teixeira, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for leaking highly classified military documents. Additionally, Levy’s office secured convictions against former eBay employees for cyberstalking a Massachusetts couple.
“We’ve brought important cases that have improved lives in Massachusetts,” Levy reflected. “Our team always worked thoughtfully and carefully in deciding whether to pursue federal charges, ensuring it was the right thing to do.”
A Lasting Impact
Levy’s office also created a Human Trafficking and Civil Rights Unit in 2022, securing convictions and long sentences for 20 individuals involved in trafficking. Other areas of focus included public corruption, child exploitation, hate crimes, police accountability, fentanyl trafficking, and gun violence.
As Levy steps away, his leadership will undoubtedly be remembered for its unwavering pursuit of justice and integrity.
