A 13-year-old boy has been charged with murder after a hit-and-run incident that killed a bicyclist in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The crash was caught on video from inside a stolen car, according to police.
The teenager, who is believed to have been driving, and a 15-year-old are both facing charges, including:
- Murder
- Conspiracy to commit murder
- Leaving the scene of an accident involving death
- Unlawful possession of a handgun
An 11-year-old who was also involved is too young to be charged with murder. However, authorities are working to determine if he can face other charges.
How the Incident Happened
On a morning in May, Scott Dwight Habermehl, 63, was riding his bike to work at Sandia National Laboratory when a car suddenly swerved into the bike lane and hit him.
Shockingly, the crash was filmed from inside the vehicle. In the video, a voice believed to be the 13-year-old driver can be heard saying he is about to hit the bicyclist. Another voice, believed to be the 15-year-old, responds:
“Just bump him, brah.”
The driver asks, “Like bump him?”
The passenger replies, “Yeah, just bump him. Go like…15…20.”
Moments later, loud crashing sounds are heard, including the sound of metal bending.
Social Media and Police Investigation
The video of the crash was later posted on social media and was reported to the police by multiple people, including a middle school principal.
The 13-year-old suspect is expected to be taken to Juvenile Detention Center soon. Meanwhile, police are still looking for the 15-year-old and 11-year-old suspects.
Authorities have not released the names of the teenagers involved because they are under 18.
This tragic case has raised concerns about youth crime and social media influence. Police continue to investigate how the boys got the stolen car and why they decided to record the incident.
