A tragic shooting took place on Monday evening in Mount Prospect, Illinois, leaving a woman critically injured and a man dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to police, 53-year-old Michael Work shot his 63-year-old ex-girlfriend in a parking garage before turning the gun on himself. The incident happened around 5 p.m. in an enclosed parking area of a condominium building on the 1200 block of Northwest Highway.
What Happened?
Authorities say the woman was pulling into the garage at about 4:45 p.m. when Work followed her inside. He allegedly waited for the garage door to stay open and drove his car inside. As she tried to park, Work deliberately crashed his vehicle into the driver’s side of her car.
After the collision, Work stepped out of his vehicle and began shooting at the woman multiple times. He then turned the gun on himself, firing a fatal shot.
History Between the Two
Police confirmed that Work and the woman had previously been in a romantic relationship, but they had broken up months ago. It is unclear if there had been any prior threats or warnings before this violent attack.
The Aftermath
Both Work and the woman were rushed to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge for emergency treatment. Work, a resident of Shorewood, Wisconsin, was pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m.
