Biden’s Medal of Freedom Picks Spark Backlash: What You Need to Know

Share news:

When President Biden awarded the Medal of Freedom—the highest civilian honor in the U.S.—it was meant to celebrate extraordinary contributions to society. But, some of his choices for the prestigious award have sparked serious debate.

On Saturday, Biden honored 19 individuals, including big names like George Soros, Hillary Clinton, Anna Wintour, Denzel Washington, and Lionel Messi, to name just a few. The list also included humanitarian chefs, athletes, and iconic figures from various fields.

As Biden put it, these honorees were celebrated for their “defiant statements,” “humanitarian efforts,” and for being “rock stars” in their respective fields. He praised them for giving hope to those in need and for shaping culture and memories in meaningful ways.

However, the president faced immediate backlash from Republican lawmakers who were particularly upset about two of the recipients: Soros and Clinton.

Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) voiced his frustration online, suggesting that Soros’ multi-million-dollar donations to Democratic causes earned him the Medal, implying that financial support might have played a role in his recognition. “Apparently, all it takes to receive the highest civilian honor from President Biden is to donate millions to him and his family,” Scott said.

Rep. Eli Crane (R-Ariz.) also joined the criticism, pointing out that Biden awarded the Medal to Soros and Clinton while someone like Daniel Penny, a figure they supported, went unrecognized.

Soros, known for his political donations to Democratic causes, has long been a target for critics, especially those on the right. They argue that his wealth and influence shouldn’t be enough to earn him such a prestigious award.

Clinton, a former First Lady, Secretary of State, and presidential candidate, also received criticism. Many Republicans were particularly unhappy that she, having lost the 2016 election to President Trump, was honored in such a public way.

Some lawmakers saw this move as a symbol of Democratic priorities. Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) described the decision as “outrageous” and suggested that Democratic policies are too supportive of criminals. He took it further, saying, “If you want less crime, vote Republican.”

The Medal of Freedom, traditionally given to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to American society, has always been a subject of debate. But Biden’s choices, especially Soros and Clinton, have made this year’s ceremony especially controversial.
