A person is in custody following an incident at the Cape Girardeau SportsPlex on Sunday, February 2, during a travel basketball rental tournament. The altercation occurred around 1:30 p.m. when tensions escalated between participants from visiting teams, prompting the game to be halted. In response to the situation, the two coaches involved were asked to leave the facility as a precautionary measure. To ensure safety, all other games were paused until the coaches exited the building, at which point the tournament and other activities resumed.
However, as the coaches left the SportsPlex, one of them allegedly made a threat towards the other. This led to a call to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, and officers responded promptly to the scene. Police detained the individual who made the threat in the parking lot of the SportsPlex and took them into custody.
The SportsPlex confirmed that there were no weapons inside the facility, and no shots were fired either inside or outside the building. According to Cape Girardeau Police Department’s Ptlm. Bobby Newton, there were no reported injuries in connection with the altercation. The situation was resolved without any physical harm to those involved.
