The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating a police-involved shooting that happened on Sunday morning in North Lawndale.
According to police, officers received a report of a robbery in the 1800 block of South Ridgeway Avenue at 10:47 a.m. When they arrived at the location, they saw a man and began to chase him on foot. During the chase, the man and the officers exchanged gunfire multiple times. The man was shot during the incident.
Emergency responders took the man to a nearby hospital, where he later passed away from his injuries. Police confirmed that a firearm was found at the scene. The officers involved in the shooting were also taken to the hospital for evaluation, but no serious injuries were reported.
As part of standard procedure, the officers will be placed on administrative leave for 30 days while the investigation takes place. This is a routine policy followed after incidents involving the use of force.
Both COPA and the Investigative Response Team are currently looking into the details of the shooting. Their goal is to determine exactly what happened and whether the officers followed proper procedures.
The investigation will include reviewing body camera footage, witness statements, and physical evidence from the scene. Once completed, COPA will release its findings to the public.
This case is part of an ongoing effort to ensure transparency and accountability in police actions. More information will be shared as the investigation progresses.
