A tragic incident unfolded at the Cuyahoga County Jail on Thursday night when a 27-year-old inmate collapsed during recreational time and later died at the hospital. According to a statement from county spokeswoman Jennifer Ciaccia, the inmate was taking part in an activity around 7:25 p.m. when he suddenly fell to the ground.
Jail staff and medical personnel jumped into action right away, trying to help the man until paramedics arrived. He was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center, but sadly, doctors couldn’t save him, and he was pronounced dead shortly after getting there.
Authorities haven’t yet released the man’s name, but they did confirm he was being held on serious charges — carrying a concealed weapon, felonious assault, and aggravated burglary. He had been in custody since his arrest on December 28 by Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority police.
The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office is now looking into the cause of death as part of the ongoing investigation.
This is the second death at the jail in less than two weeks. On February 23, 38-year-old Jennifer Wade was found unresponsive in her cell in the mental health unit early in the morning. She was pronounced dead soon after.
These incidents have brought renewed attention to the conditions at the jail. Just last year, the families of two inmates who died there filed lawsuits against the county, claiming that officials didn’t provide the medical care their loved ones desperately needed.
