Authorities in Florida have arrested a second person connected to the December 27, 2024, shooting of an off-duty ATF agent at a bowling alley in Riverview. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the arrest of 23-year-old Tia Heyward, who is accused of helping 18-year-old Christopher Smith in the incident.
Heyward is charged with several serious crimes, including first-degree attempted murder with great bodily harm (accessory after the fact), aggravated battery with great bodily harm (accessory after the fact), and two counts of simple battery. Smith, who is the alleged shooter, faces charges including first-degree attempted murder, discharging a firearm causing great bodily harm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, tampering with evidence, and carrying a concealed firearm.
Incident Overview
The shooting occurred at The Alley at Southshore, a bowling alley in Riverview, Florida. ATF Special Agent Matthew Murray, who works in the bureau’s Tampa Field Division, was out with his wife, children, and friends when he saw a fight break out near the bowling alley’s entrance.
According to reports, Murray attempted to de-escalate the situation by identifying himself as law enforcement and asking the individuals involved to leave. During the altercation, one person reportedly threw an object at Murray. Smith claimed during a hearing that Murray had hit him on the shoulder. Smith then allegedly fired a gun, striking Murray in the back of the neck.
Aftermath of the Shooting
Agent Murray was rushed to Tampa General Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. He remains in critical condition and has been left permanently paralyzed. Smith fled the scene in a Nissan Altima but was found at a nearby home about seven hours later.
Since his arrest, Smith has been held in jail without bond. Heyward, who authorities believe assisted Smith after the shooting, is currently in jail with bond set at $42,000.
Statement from Authorities
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister praised the detectives for their hard work in holding those responsible accountable. He also expressed support for Murray, saying, “Our prayers remain with the ATF agent as he courageously embarks on his road to recovery. His bravery and selflessness exemplify his dedication to protecting our community.”
Next Steps
At this time, it is unclear when Smith and Heyward will appear in court. There is also no information on whether Heyward has secured legal representation. The investigation remains ongoing.
