A family in Houston is facing an unimaginable heartbreak during the holiday season after a hit-and-run driver took the life of 44-year-old Misty King. The tragic incident happened on Tuesday night near Scott Street and Mallow Street.
Chyna Mosquera, King’s daughter, is still in shock. Just a day before the accident, she spoke with her mom, excitedly planning their upcoming celebration.
“We were getting ready for my graduation,” Mosquera shared. “She was so excited. She kept saying, ‘I’m going to have my pretty black and white dress on, and I’ll be there for you.’” Now, Mosquera will walk across the stage to graduate from Texas Southern University without her mother there to cheer her on.
Through tears, Mosquera added, “She won’t see me graduate. She won’t see me get married or have kids. She won’t see me do anything.”
The tragedy unfolded around 9 p.m. on Tuesday. Misty King was crossing Scott Street when a speeding white Ford pickup truck came barreling down, hitting her and leaving her lifeless on the street. The driver didn’t stop.
A nearby surveillance camera caught the chilling moment when the truck turned the corner and struck King. Kevin Jones, who was in the area at the time, arrived shortly after the crash. “Her body was just lying there on her back, and her face was all bloody,” Jones recalled. “We called the police, but someone said they were already on their way.”
This devastating loss has reopened old wounds for Mosquera’s family. Back in 2020, her 18-year-old brother was also killed in a hit-and-run. One of the drivers in that case stopped, but the other was never caught. Now, both of Mosquera’s closest family members are gone, making the holidays an especially painful time.
“With my brother gone, the holidays were already tough,” Mosquera said. “But I still had my mom. Now I have no one.”
Misty King’s funeral is scheduled for December 19, and her family is pleading with anyone who has information about the driver to come forward.
